Fruit Preparation & Preservation for Kids & Families

Sunday, October 19, 2025

Join us on October 19th!

In this fun, hands-on, expert-led class, children and their grown-ups will learn the basics of safe food preparation and simple preservation methods using freshly rescued Community Fruit Rescue apples and pears. Together, we’ll explore tasty and creative ways to make the most of the harvest as we:

  • Make applesauce on both the stovetop and in the microwave
  • Learn how to freeze applesauce for year-round enjoyment
  • Use a food dehydrator and oven to create yummy apple chips and fruit leather
  • Make a pear crisp (which we'll enjoy together at the end of the class!)

Along the way, we’ll cover key food science concepts, like how heat changes fruit, how dehydration preserves food, and why safety matters in the kitchen. Kid-friendly tools and materials will be provided, giving children the opportunity to safely practice skills such as peeling, chopping, and stirring with the guidance of their adult.

This class is designed to build confidence in the kitchen, introduce preservation techniques, and spark curiosity about where our food comes from and how we can prepare it in different ways. Families will leave with both knowledge and tasty fruit treats to enjoy!

Leading this class: Chef Trae Durica
Chef Trae is a 27-year veteran of the Food Service Industry. Trained at the Culinary Institute of America, he has worked in England and New York City before relocating to Boulder, Colorado. His career has spanned Michelin-star restaurants, school cafeterias, coffee shops, and ice cream parlors. When he’s not managing The Bookmark Café for the Boulder Public Library District, you’ll find him gardening, making fruit leather, or trying to convince his dog Frangie to go for a walk. Chef Trae is excited to team up with Community Fruit Rescue to share his skills and passion for preserving food with you.
