Canning Made Easy: Applesauce Edition

Sunday, October 12, 2025

Join us on October 12th!

In this beginner-friendly, expert-led class, you’ll learn the basics of canning and preserving using one of the simplest (and tastiest) recipes—homemade applesauce! Together we’ll transform freshly rescued Community Fruit Rescue apples into sauce and safely preserve them in jars using the hot water bath method. Along the way, you’ll pick up tips and tricks to make the process easy and fun. By the end, you’ll head home with your very own jar of applesauce and the know-how to start preserving other fruits, too. No experience needed—just come ready to peel, stir, taste, and enjoy the magic of canning.

What You’ll Learn:
  • The essentials of canning equipment (and what you can skip!)
  • How to prep, cook, and season applesauce for preserving
  • Safe methods for filling and sealing jars
  • Food safety tips to keep your preserves fresh and delicious
  • How to expand your skills to other fruits and recipes

Leading this class: Chef Trae Durica
Chef Trae is a 27-year veteran of the Food Service Industry. Trained at the Culinary Institute of America, he has worked in England and New York City before relocating to Boulder, Colorado. His career has spanned Michelin-star restaurants, school cafeterias, coffee shops, and ice cream parlors. When he’s not managing The Bookmark Café for the Boulder Public Library District, you’ll find him gardening, making fruit leather, or trying to convince his dog Frangie to go for a walk. Chef Trae is excited to team up with Community Fruit Rescue to share his skills and passion for preserving food with you.
